If you've never heard of Daiya, then listen up! Daiya focuses on people’s favourite ways to enjoy cheese with their delicious dairy-free cheese alternatives. They've created Shreds, Wedges, Slices, Cream Cheese Style Spreads and Pizzas. And all the Daiya products are free of three of the most common allergens: dairy (casein, whey and lactose), soy and gluten. But what they do contain is creaminess, flavour and savoury goodness! Yes!
But could this die-hard cheese addict really enjoy non-dairy cheese? Well, I was certainly up for the test. And what did I try? How about some Vegan Swiss Cheese?
What I had been craving was a really good sandwich, so the cheese slices were perfect. The Swiss slices are the perfect sandwich size and not to thin either. A little more delicate than regular Swiss cheese, but that didn't stop me. I slapped a slice on my bread and popped it in the toaster oven to see if it really would melt. When I took it out it looked slightly bubbly and gooey; definitely promising. I added my sandwich top and sliced it in half. And that's when I saw a little bit of magic. Gooey strings of cheese oozing out the sides of my lunch. Mmmm!
So the vegan cheese had passed the look and feel test. Now to the taste....the Daiya cheese was creamy and buttery and very yummy. I would say it was Swiss-esque in flavour. And it definitely filled my cheese-craving hole!
I was surprised to say the least. Now, this coming from a recovering cheese-aholic, I will say that the Daiya cheese is a great substitute for the real thing; not a replacement. They are both different, but good in their own right. So if you're craving some cheesy goodness without the dairy, then grab some of this stuff. In my opinion, it won't fool a cheese connoisseur, but it will definitely give you that cheese fix you're looking for! Well done Daiya!
