Must Haves for Your Medicine Cabinet

Yesterday I was home with one very sick little kiddo and I thought it would be a good idea to give you a peak into my medicine cabinet.  Yes, we do have a couple traditional medicines, but the majority of our cupboard is filled with natural alternatives.  Here's my 3 must-haves for the Cold & Flu Season:

Zinc Lozenges:
A lot of us don't even think about Zinc, but it's a pretty important little mineral. Since we can't store zinc we need a daily supply to keep our bodies functioning.  And not too mention zinc actually helps promote strong immunity.  Perfect for cold & flu season!  I always to make sure to have a bottle of these on hand for any signs of the sniffles.  Check out some more amazing benefits to taking zinc from Dr. Mercola.

Colloidal Silver :
This might be something you've never heard of before, but it's pretty amazing. Colloidal silver has been known as a remarkably effective natural antibiotic for centuries. But in the past several decades, research has shown colloidal silver can even eradicate antibiotic-resistant microbes like MRSA , the Avian Influenza (bird flu), and Human Corona virus (SARS). It also increases the effectiveness of antibiotics.  This stuff is great for so many different ailments.  We've used it for colds and flu's, sore throats, eye infections, cuts and scrapes and even nasty diaper rashes!

Probiotics - OK so these aren't in my medicine cabinet, but in my fridge.  More and more people are starting to discover that the key to good health and a strong immune system is your gut. 80% of your immune system is from your gut! So in order to keep thing working properly you need to maintain the proper balance of healthy gut flora.  With the increase in antibiotic use, antibacterial products, processed foods and poor diet, it's easy for this balance to get out of whack and that means....you get sick.  Here's some great info on probiotics and how to pick one that's right for you.  We take them daily, but add an extra boost if someone is starting to feel under the weather.  And we always take some in our suitcase when travelling.  Perfect to keeping you feeling good in those foreign places.

These are just a few of my favourite illness-busting items we keep on hand.  We have a whole arsenal of natural and alternative remedies too.  Don't know where to start? There's tons of information online, but I recommend visiting a Naturopath to help pick out what is best for you and your family.  Remember, I'm not a doctor, these opinions are my own.  But I can tell you from our experience, we are sick much less than we were before taking natural remedies.  And any illnesses that do sneak in our homestead are short-lived and resolved without antibiotics.  That's pretty exciting given just a couple years ago at this time we were battling pneumonia & bronchitis on repeat for a couple months!

  1. I totally agree with you - all 3 of these I have on hand all the time and I take probiotics daily and Zinc. Keep the collodial silver in my cabinet whenever I feel a cold coming on. Thanks for sharing your great suggestions.
