Thrifty Thursday: Get Fit for Free

If you're like most people, myself included, you likely made a New Year's Resolution involving losing weight and/or getting in shape.  So congratulations in taking a big step towards a healthier change.  Yes, it will be hard and yes, you'll want to give up, but stay strong, it will be worth it.  Now you're thinking, what about the gym membership or personal trainer or exercise classes; how can I afford that? You don't have to.  One of the best parts of getting in shape is you can do it for free, or pretty close to it.


And here are some of my favourite ways to get fit for free:
  1. Go for a Walk (or Run) - one of the best forms of exercise is walking.  It's low impact, easy to do and you don't need any fancy equipment other than a good pair of shoes. Did you know there's even walking marathon's?  There's a lady in my neighbourhood who walks (or should I say practically jogs) past our house everyday and she's out there for hours.  And I can tell you she's one fit lady! On top of the physical benefits, it's also a great way to de-stress, clear your head or get creative.
  2. Calisthenics - or body weight exercises.  Yup, those things you hated in gym class are actually really good for getting in shape. I'm talking about Lunges, Squats, Push-Ups, Sit- Ups, Plank, Dips, Jumping Jacks.  Essentially, strength exercises just using your body weight. Best part is they're free and can be done just about anywhere. A quick search will generate tons of  workout's using nothing but your own body.  Check out some of my favourites HERE.
  3. Watch a video - well not just any video, an exercise video.  Don't have any? Ask a friend and they're bound to have at least a couple you could borrow.  Or you can always check out your library, you can rent them for free and work on your Jazzercise moves in your living room.  I don't have a lot of space for aerobics videos, but I do enjoy a Yoga or Pilates class on my TV.  
  4. Back to School - what I mean is check out your local schools.  Many of our schools offer various classes in the evenings for next to nothing.  I just signed up to do a Yoga class with my girlfriend on Thursdays. You can even check out local churches and libraries too. The classes I have taken have all been taught by experienced, professional instructors and I'm still puzzled on how they are such a great price.  My upcoming Yoga class is about 75% cheaper than what you'd pay at a studio.  Sweet!
